The 33-year-old United captain is out of contract in the summer and his advisers have already started negotiating with Inter Milan after being made aware that the Old Trafford club have no current plans to take up the option of extending his deal by a further 12 months.
United have until March to make Valencia an offer – but they are aware that the Ecuadorian international is already assessing his options.
Inter would like to land the versatile Valencia in the current transfer window. But United do not want to weaken Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad while they have no immediate plans to recruit a replacement.
Valencia, a £16million signing from Wigan in the summer of 2009, has reinvented himself as a right-back in recent years after starting his career as a winger.
He was made captain by Jose Mourinho – but then fell out of favour with the former United manager before he was sacked last month.
Solskjaer has brought him back into the first-team frame.But while United have triggered contract extensions for David de Gea and Anthony Martial, no offer has been made to Valencia or defender Phil Jones. Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Ashley Young are all six months away from being free agents.
