Nigerian star table tennis player Quadri Aruna won big at the Awards this year. The 2018 Nigerian Sports awards this year was held at the Eko Hotels and Suite in Victoria Island in Lagos.
Quadri has performed par excellence this year and brought a lot of recognition to his country through his game. He was awarded the Sportsman of the Year, edging past D’Tigers stars like Digou and Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa.
Next, come Evelyn Akhator who led the team of D’Tigress to finish at the eighth place at the 2018 FIFA Basketball World Cup won the Sportswoman of the Year award edging past wrestler OdunayoAdekuoroye and winter Olympian SimideleAdeagbo in the category.

The award ceremony saw sports persons from different fields winning it big. Some of them got to bag the award at a very young age, a testimony to the talent that Nigeria has today in the sports world.
Some of the other big winners included Ahmed Musa who beat his teammate Kenneth Omeruo and Rasheedat Ajibade, the forward of the Super Falcons to win the Footballer of the Year award.
An award was also given to the sports governor of the year. This award was won by the River State Governor Nyesom Wike who beat Lagos State’s AkinwumuAmbode and Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of the Delta State. Akhator edged past teammate Adora Elonu and Dihou from D’Tigers to win the basketball award.
The Administrator of the Year award went to Francis Orbih who is the president of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria beating Musa Kida and AmajuPinnick who are the presidents of Nigerian Basketball association and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) respectively.
Commonwealth Gamers, 2018 medal winner OdunayoAdekuoroye, bagged the award for Wrestler of the Year, beating John Emmanuel and Blessing Oburududu.
Para-lifting coach Are Feyisetan was the Coach of the Year, beating the coach of Super Eagles Gernot Rohr and the coach of DTigress Otis Hugley.
Badminton player Yemisi Olatunji won the award for the best Racquet Sportsperson of the Year. She won the award beating ArunaQuadri and Marylove Edwards.
Esther Oyema who is a world record holder and a Commonwealth champion bagged the Para (Special) Sports Person of the Year award, edging past Bose Omolayo and Paul Kehinde.
It was the night for the Commonwealth medal winners as TobilobaAmusan won the award for Track and Field Star of the Year, beating Ese Brume and Joy Udoh-Gabriel.
Sean Adigun won in the team Sportsperson of the Year category beating Kingsley Okubuike. Finally, Joy Udoh-Gabriel was awarded the Discovery of the Year Award. He beat Simisola Balogun and Lateef OladokunOmidiji to bag this honor.
Overall, it was a memorable night for Nigerian sports and its fraternity.
