Drama as Benue impounds 105 cows over Open grazing

The Benue State Livestock Guards have impounded 105 cows and four sheep caught grazing openly near the Akawe Torkula College of Advanced and Professional Studies, Makurdi.

Confirming the development, the Commander, Benue State Livestock Guards, Mr Linus Zaki, said one herder, Kunje Saija, was also arrested in the course of the operation.

He explained that in accordance with the Benue State Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, the impounded cows would be quarantined for seven days.

He added that the animals would be auctioned if the owners failed to pay the fines stipulated by the law.

He warned herdsmen of the consequences of flouting the law, stressing the need for ranching of all forms of livestock in the state.

Meanwhile, there was a fresh attack on Monday by alleged herdsmen on Ukemberagya Gaambe-Tiev in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, leading to the death of a father of seven, Mr Ioewuese Myaga.

A community leader in the area, Anawah Joseph, told our correspondent that following the attack, the residents had deserted the area.
