Navas has been reduced to just two La Liga appearances this term for Los Blancos having falling down the pecking order since Thibaut Courtois’ arrival. At 32 years of age the Costa Rica international is keen to play regular football and may now be offered a way out by Arsenal. According to Spanish publication El Confidencial, Emery is ‘in a hurry’ to rush through a deal for Navas who Madrid value at around €14m (£12.6m).
News of Emery reportedly wanting to sign Navas may come as a shock to Gunners fans following Leno’s performances this season. Leno has appeared relatively comfortable since settling into life in north London but did come in for criticism in their 3-2 defeat to Southampton at the weekend.
”The last goal was a little bit unlucky for me because I wanted to get the cross because Austin was completely free and it was so close,” he said. “I touched the ball a little bit but I missed it so it was a little bit unlucky. No risk, no fun.
“Maybe next time I will get the ball or I will stay on the line look at the ball and nobody says ‘You came out and didn’t get the ball’. That’s the life of a goalkeeper but I would do it again. “After 22 games, you can lose a game so it is disappointing but now nobody talks anymore about the unbeaten run and we can look forward.”
A keeper of Navas’ experience would certainly keep Leno on his toes but it remains to be seen if the board will meet Emery’s request. Navas, who has been with Madrid since 2014, has won the Champions League on three occasions and La Liga once.
