Tragic! Four die, 15 injured in early morning car crash in Abuja

Four persons lost their lives in an early morning crash involving four vehicles on the Ushafa-Bwari Road in the Federal Capital Territory on Monday.

It was gathered that three males and one female died, while 13 others were injured in the accident, which involved a commercial bus; a 2001 model Mazda 232 car; a 2004 model Toyota Corolla and a Mercedes Benz car.

The Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Bisi Kazeem, attributed the crash to dangerous driving, adding that the Mercedes Benz car driven by a woman lost control and veered off to the Dutse-Bwari lane after one of its tyres pulled on motion.

Kazeem stated that the injured had been taken to the Bwari General Hospital for treatment, while the corpses of the deceased were deposited at the morgue.

He explained that the FRSC personnel in Bwari and the police got to the scene shortly after the crashes and cleared the obstruction to enable free passage of vehicles.

Meanwhile, 15 persons were confirmed to be seriously injured on Monday following a crash involving two commercial vehicles along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

The accident, which occurred at Barde, Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, about 70 kilometres to Abuja, involved a Plateau Riders’ Sharon commercial vehicle with registration number LGT 440 XA, which was coming from Jabi in Abuja, and an Opel car with registration number ER 720 ABJ, coming from Jos.

Although the details of the crash, which took place a few minutes before the arrival of the PUNCH Metro correspondent, were still sketchy, it was learnt that it was caused by one of the vehicles, trying to avoid a pothole.

Some of the passengers had serious injuries to their hands and legs, while others had bleeding noses.

The driver of the Plateau Riders’ commercial vehicle, Mohammed Mukaila, told PUNCH Metro that the driver of the car coming from the opposite direction was avoiding a pothole when the crash occured.

“We were coming from Abuja; just after the checkpoint, the driver of the Opel coming from Jos left his lane and decided to come to my lane. He was struggling with the steering and it was obvious that he was on speed and trying to avoid a pothole. We thank God that nobody died, but people were seriously injured,” he stated
