Police seal Anambra House of Assembly complex as APGA suspends new speaker

The Anambra House of Assembly complex was on Friday sealed by security agencies. Workers and journalists were barred from accessing the complex on Friday.

The development is as a result of crisis generated over the reported impeachment of the erstwhile Speaker of the Assembly, Rita Maduagwu.

On Tuesday, 20 out of 30 lawmakers impeached Maduagwu and elected Ike Uzoezie as new Speaker. But Mrs Maduagwu later sat with 11 members same day and declared her removal illegal. Uzoeze and Maduagwu both adjourned till Thursday.

On Thursday, 25 lawmakers out of 30 attended sitting presided over by the new speaker. The sitting was however preceded by police cordoning the area initially and firing teargas at lawmakers and supporters of both factions. The sitting led by Uzoeze held after normalcy returned.
Maduagwu, who did not attend the sitting, is believed to enjoy the support of the state government and the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the state.

Meanwhile, APGA has suspended Uzoezie, and two other principal officers – Deputy Speaker, Hartford Oseke and the Majority Leader, Maduforom Okoye.

They were suspended for their perceived roles in the removal of Maduagwu.

The state chairman of the party, Chief Nobert Obi, who spoke with reporters at the party’s secretariat in Awka, said th trio would remain suspended “pending the time they will appear before the disciplinary committee of the party for further action.”

Obi, who acknowledged that the impeachment crisis was ill- timed, especially now that the cohesion of the party was in shambles as a result of the misunderstanding arising from the recent party primaries, expressed disappointment in the conduct of the suspended members, saying the party has set up disciplinary committee to investigate their grievances in a bid to restore peace in the House.
