News In Pictures: 36 rescued while multiple life lost from collapsed building

Thirty-six people have so far been rescued from the rubble of the collapsed 7-storeyed building in GRA, Port Harcourt.

However, four bodies which were pulled from the building unconscious have been pronounced dead.

Majority of those rescued were rushed into a waiting ambulance and then to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH and the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital.

According to reports online, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Red Cross, officials from the Rivers state Special Duties were leading the rescue operations with construction giant, Julius Berger providing logistic support.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Government has said it is poised to ensuring that those trapped in the collapsed seven-floor building in GRA are rescued.

Deputy Governor, Ipalibo Harry-Banigo said this when he led other members of the state Executive Council, to the scene of the collapsed building.

Banigo said efforts by the Rivers state government, NEMA and other agencies led to the rescue of 36 victims as at last night.

“We were here yesterday with all relevant members of the State Executive Council; we had all the Emergency Medical Services on ground in collaboration with UPTH, NEMA and others; they have all been on ground working all night and I’m here to encourage them to keep on working because there are people there that must be rescued.
“Once we do the tunnelling, oxygen would go in there and they will stay alive and we are not relenting on these efforts” Banigo stressed.

In a similarly vein, the Rivers state House of Assembly has said it will convene an emergency session early next week to deliberate on the collapse of the seven-storeyed building in GRA.

Leader of the House, Martins Amaewhule who was in company of other members to the scene of the collapsed building said part of the deliberation will be to investigate the cause of the collapsed building.

Amaewhule while commending those involved in the rescue operation, said the Rivers state government had also lived up to expectation by providing support.

In the meantime, the Rivers State Police Command has said machinery had been put in place to ensure that the rescue operation was effectively carried out.
Spokesman of the Command, Nnamdi Omoni said that the Commissioner of Police, Zaki Amhed visited the scene when the incident happened and directed the area Commander to remain at the scene to coordinate the officers.

DSP Omoni also said part of their responsibility was to control the crowd who are already running out of patience.

The rescue operation was still on at the time of filing this report.
