Residents of Ekerin layout, behind Abe Technical College/New Garage/Akala Expressway in Oluyole Local Government Area of Ibadan, Oyo State, were sacked from their homes on Thursday by some gun-wielding land grabbers.

The alleged land grabbers were also armed with padlocks, chains and red paint with which they marked ‘X’ on the affected buildings.

Eyewitnesses said many people ran away, while those who were caught unawares by the development had to scale fences upon discovering that their houses had been locked up.

A notice from the Oyo State High Court dated October 31, 2018 in suit number 1/567/84 between Alhaji Emiola Adeleke versus Bayo Asani and others giving possession of properties in the area to one of the parties and was posted on the buildings.

The affected residents, school owners, filling station operators and church owners said they were surprised to see miscreants with guns, machetes and other dangerous weapons forcefully gaining entry into various premises and locking up the gates.

Mostly affected were pupils of a private school, George and Duke, located on the expressway; customers and workers of BJ Food, ADETS Oil filling station, Jaypee Lounge, Rhema Church, Fit Price Restaurant, Mahendra Drilling, DSTV office, JFK Inn and over 100 residential buildings in the area.

The Chairman of the community, Alhaji Lamina Ajimotokan, told journalists that the residents were not aware of any litigation on the land.

Ajimotokan, who said about 67 property owners came to the area through him, queried the legality of the court order, which he claimed was never brought to their notice.

The septuagenarian, who was locked in with his family members, decried the action of the land grabbers and called on the Oyo State Government to intervene in the crisis.

He said nowhere in the world would such a barbaric act take place in broad daylight without any notice, arguing that the incident must never be swept under the carpet.

Ajimotokan said the plots of land were mostly sold to them under the Ekerin layout by the Ekerin family, who had initially bought same from the Olugbesan  family.

He stated that he purchased his own piece of land in 1974 and he and his family had been living there for 36 years.
