Two policemen attached to the Kaduna State Police Command and a driver have been killed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen at the International Beers and Beverages Industries, Trikaniya, along Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe Western Bye-Pass, in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

It was also gathered that five other policemen sustained injuries during the Wednesday attack and were being treated at an undisclosed hospital in the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the two cops were among others attached to the brewery, while the driver, worked with the company.

PUNCH correspondent gathered that the gunmen dressed in long robe, alighted from a truck and made for the IBBI where they opened fire on the policemen.

A source said, “It happened around 5am today (Wednesday). The gunmen dressed in kaftan came down from a truck and went to the IBBI gate.

“They started shooting and people who were going for Islamic morning prayer ran for dear lives.”

The eyewitness said the two policemen died on the spot, while those who were injured were rushed to the St. Gerald Catholic Hospital located a few kilometres away from the scene of the attack.

It was gathered that seven persons were hit by bullets, among them was the driver who later died in the hospital.

The Kaduna police command confirmed the incident, saying that after a fierce gun battle, two policemen and a driver were killed, while five other policemen sustained injuries.

A statement from the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Yakubu Abubakar,  a Deputy Superintendent of Police, added that the policemen’s guns were not stolen by the attackers “due to the repelling firepower of our men.”

The statement read in part, “After a fierce gun duel, two of our men and a civilian driver were killed. Five other policemen sustained gun injuries and are receiving treatment at a hospital in Kaduna.

“No arm was taken away by the attackers due to the repelling gun power of our men. Some of the attackers escaped with gun injuries.

“Detectives have been mobilised to track down the fleeing killers and bring them to justice.”

The PPRO said the state Commissioner of Police was saddened by the incident and had vowed to bring the perpetrators to book.
