News In Picture: Lagosians React, As Police Allegedly Disrupt Lekki Toll Protest

Anger, resentment and protest has followed the high toll charges at the Lekki toll plaza.
It would be recalled that on February 1, the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) effected a 100 per cent increase in some tolls collected at the Lagos-Ajah highway and the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge.

Lagos Makes Statement On Increment Of Lekki Tollgate Tariff

Leading a peaceful protest, the convener of the protest, Mr Adedotun Hassan, described the toll hikes as unacceptable, unfair and killing.

He said it was unthinkable for a government to impose such a burden on hapless and poorly paid residents at a difficult moment like now, calling on the Lagos State Government to cancel the toll increases.
The protest, which was convened under the banner of Eti-Osa Development Forum, started yesterday with the protesters gathering at the Lekki Penninsula Scheme 1 gate.

The protesters demanded that the Lagos State Government stop the operation of the Lekki Concession Company, operators of the tolls and show the financial statements of the company since the concession was bought by the state government.

Hassan said, “Residents are not happy with the situation. The increment is killing, that is why we are staging this protest.”
“We want the government to cancel the tolls because we pay our taxes, the amount is too high, residents are being short-changed.”

“We belong to the same Lagos State, ours is not different. Is it a crime to live in Lekki? What have we done to warrant this punishment?’’

While reacting, some Nigerians who felt yesterday’s protest wasn’t enough are already suggesting that they disrupt the Lagos marathon holding today. The residents are worried that the increase in the toll gate will result in higher transportation cost, and ultimately higher cost of living.

It would be recalled that the Lagos State government had three months ago halted proposed tariff hike on Lekki-Epe Expressway and Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, by the Lekki Concession Company (LCC).

The suspension, government said, was necessary till consultations with the stakeholders are concluded.
