Announcing the former president's new appointment in New York through his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, the UNSG commended the people of Liberia for the peaceful conduct of the election.
Dujarric said in a statement: “The Secretary-General hopes that the will of the Liberian electorate will be respected and that a seamless transfer of power will take place within constitutional timelines."
Guterres also requested that Obasanjo, who is a member of the Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation, travel to Liberia's capital city, Monrovia, from Thursday, December 28 to Saturday, December 30.
According to a report, the past president, Goodluck Jonathan, co-led the United States’ National Democratic Institute (NDI) International Elections Observation Mission to Liberia.
Jonathan while speaking on the issues in Liberia said the country is seriously moving towards becoming Africa's model of democracy.
