However, La Liga president Javier Tebas announced earlier this week that Messi had signed a new four-year deal, ending months of speculation surrounding his future.
It is reported that the contract extension was signed back in June and that Barcelona have since started preparation on a deal which would see him remain at the Nou Camp ‘for life’.
Messi had remained loyal to Barcelona throughout and refused to entertain offers from different clubs.
Mundo Deportivo reports thay Barcelona want the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to stay at the club for the rest of his life, even after his playing days are over.
The club have been stung by Neymar’s departure in the summer and want to tie Messi down to a similar deal to the one Andres Iniesta agreed last month, which will see him remain at Barcelona for the rest of his career.
Barcelona executive Oscar Grau announced at the club’s general assembly last month that the club were working on a new lifetime contract for their superstar.
Grau told the assembly, “Messi signed a four-year deal in June, but the club will offer him a lifetime contract.”
“The idea is for Leo, who has been here since he was little, to stay here for life because he is an icon. After his playing days we want him to continue to be linked to the club.”
And last week Tebas also confirmed Messi’s deal until 2021 had already been agreed, saying, “Messi has a contract which has been renewed.”
“Contracts are official when they are signed and not when it is announced. Messi has signed with Barcelona, if I have not been lied to, he has signed.”
The uncertainty around his previous deal had alerted the attentions of big-spending Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.
Messi has started the season in scintillating form with 12 goals in 11 La Liga games as Barcelona top the table, four points clear of second-placed Valencia and eight ahead of holders Real Madrid.
