Arsenal 0 - 3 Manchester City
This was a very bad afternoon for Arsenal and for their manager Arsene Wenger with his side appearing weak and fragile as they simply could not cope with City’s attacking power, intensity and energy.
Not that City even had to play that well, at least until they turned it on after half-time. But even before that they were still far too good for Arsenal who once more lurch towards an angst-ridden period of self-reflection as another season lurches into disappointment. They do not even play good football any more.
It was also a triumph for the City old guard, players who long pre-date Guardiola, with goals from Sergio Aguero, David Silva and captain Vincent Kompany.
There will be more, bigger trophies for Guardiola – who again defied the Football Association by wearing a yellow ribbon in support of imprisoned Catalan politicians – but his sparkling reign is finally underway with its first.
Given the purity of City’s football this season it was ironic that they scored their opening goal through a route one hump down the pitch by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. It seemed simple enough but the ball sailed over the head of Shkodran Mustafi who then forlornly appealed that he had been pushed by Aguero who ran on to lift the ball over goalkeeper David Ospina and into the net. Arsenal players sprinted to the assistant referee and on the touchline Wenger angrily argued with Guardiola until the pair eventually shook hands. THINK YOUR FRIEND WOULD BE INTRESTED?
