“This is the purge, right?” he says of the current state of affairs. “This is the cleanse, this is what happens. This is the natural reaction to the amount of light that came into the world when Barack Obama was the president.”
Smith doesn't mention President Trump or this week's Alabama election directly, but in a feature with Indiewire, politics were clearly on his mind.
“We had to expect that [the pendulum] was going to go the other way,” he explains, seemingly talking about the turn of events in Alabama. “As a cleanse — this is the darkness before the dawn.”
The Hollywood actor's comments, however, weren't entirely unrelated to his latest movie.
Bright actually takes place in a dystopian Los Angeles setting where human and mythological characters confront their differences, which sounds a bit familiar to the world in 2017.
At the same time, Smith's thoughts have become more focused on looking towards the future.
"I feel very, very strongly that we are shifting into what the next age of humanity is going to be right now,” he says. “It’s just the s*** has to get stirred up, in a way. We’re seeing it all.”
The 49-year-old doesn't see things getting better anytime soon, but he still remains optimistic.
“It’s going to be really interesting to see how humanity reacts to it, and it’s going to be a f****** mess," Smith says. It’s going to be a mess, but it’s the mess in the cleanup. It’s the mess and the purge before that new, real light shows up.”
