Why FG is not enjoying full private sector contribution to development – ACCI Reveals

The President of Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Tony Ejinkeonye, on Thursday urged the federal government to create the right environment for the private sector to meaningfully contribute to development.

According to him, the government is not enjoying full private sector participation in its developmental efforts because a sustainable framework of mutual trust between the public and private sector has not been created.

He said this when he delivered a lecture on “The Role of the Private Sector in FCT Development” at the second annual lecture series of the ‘Just Friends Club of Nigeria’ in Abuja

Ejinkeonye, who noted that the private sector has a great role to play in the development, said: “an active engagement of the private sector is critical for the much needed acceleration in the progress for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

In his remarks, the President of ‘Just Friends Club of Nigeria’, Chief Green Amakwe, said the annual lecture was informed by the need to extend the frontiers of economic, social, political and cultural discourse and thereby positively influencing the way our country is run.

He stated that though the recession which the country has just emerged from has put a hold on developmental initiatives, the government needs to put more efforts to bring back life to the country, especially the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), through the creation of enabling environment for the private sector to thrive.

He insisted that “the government must create the right environment to unleash private sector participation in development.”

He added that “the federal government together with the Federal Capital Development Administration can stimulate private sector involvement in development initiatives by providing a steady flow of well-structured economic and social infrastructure projects as well as implementing standardized PPP procurement processes.”
