The shooting of Lagos youth was not reported to the police – Command Says

The Lagos State Police Command says the shooting of a youth allegedly by some operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad was not reported to the police.

The command enjoined members of the public to report any infringement on their rights by policemen to the Citizens Complaint Centre established by the Acting Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi.

PUNCH Metro had on Monday reported that a mob in the Yaba area of the state chased some SARS men for allegedly shooting a youth, hauling stones at the operatives.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, had said the authenticity of the viral video, which captured the incident, was in doubt.

On Monday, Oti said after investigations, the command found out that the case was not reported at any police division in the state.

He said, “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Ag.Cp Edgal Imohimi, wishes to assure the general public that such an event did not happen in Yaba or in any part of the state. Also, it was not reported at any police formation within the Lagos State Police Command.

“The Divisional Police Officers in charge of Yaba and Adekunle police stations, in whose areas the shooting purportedly took place, have jointly debunked the allegation as a ruse.”

According to the police spokesperson, Imohimi enjoined members of the public not to believe reports on police misconduct on the social media hook, line, and sinker.

“In a similar vein, the Commissioner of Police also wishes to state that no young man was brutalised by SARS operatives in Lagos as alleged in some social media platforms neither did any young man reported that he was brutalised at any of the police formations under the Lagos State Command.

“The Commissioner of Police further encourages residents of Lagos to report infringement on their rights by any police officer to the Citizens Complaint Centre, established by the Acting Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, by calling any of the following phone numbers: 08067945296 and 08063025274,” he added.

However, a reader with the alias, Guy Rich, commented on PUNCH Online that the shooting actually happened.

“It happened at Abule Ijesha on Eletu Idibo Street, Yaba,” he wrote.
