NEWS IN PICTURE: Serena Williams Returns To Tennis Court For First Time Since Giving Birth To Honor Late Sister Yetunde

Serena Williams returned to the tennis court for the first time publicly since giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, on September 1 of this year. But she didn’t return for a tournament just yet. Instead, the 36-year-old tennis star hit around a few balls for a good cause.
According to PEOPLE, Serena and big sister Venus played a few rounds of tennis while hosting “A Family Affair, Presented by Oath,” in D.C. to raise money for their Yetunde Price Resource Center in Compton, Calif. The event was presented in conjunction with storytelling platform MAKERS. The Yetunde Price Resource Center was launched last year and is in honor of their late sister, Yetunde, who was murdered in 2003 in a drive-by shooting in Compton.

When they weren’t on the court, the sisters spoke to ESPN’s Jemele Hill, who moderated the event, about how violence has affected their family.

“Violence has affected our lives personally — we lost our sister, she was the oldest — to violence,” said Serena. “There’s a lot of times where people are in the communities and they don’t have a place or an area or somewhere they can go to put that energy – to get some of that negative energy out and be creative.”
“Violence has hit very close to home in our family and families of loved ones and it’s not easy, but through it we become stronger and also through it we’re able to help other people,” said Venus. “It’s been a wonderful experience to be a part of the Yetunde Price Resource Center … Just by doing something positive with your life…you motivate others and then those others actually motivate you to do better. It becomes this circle of positivity.”
Serena’s husband, Alexis, was present for the event and shared a picture of his new wife on the court:

After giving birth in September and saying “I do” in November, Williams is reportedly prepping to return to the court in January for the Australian Open in the hopes of defending her title, this according to tournament director Craig Tiley. She beat big sister Venus while carrying baby Alexis during this year’s Australian Open tournament.

We’re looking forward to her return to the tennis court, whenever that will officially be. Until then, baby steps (pun intended).
