The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday said it was not aware of the alleged presidential ambition of its National Chairman, Ahmed Makarfi, with regards to the 2019 general elections.
It also dismissed as false the allegation that Makarfi and the National Caretaker Committee were manipulating affairs of the party in favour of their political interests.
At a press conference addressed by the party’s spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye, the PDP lamented that it could not enforce the peace accord signed by its chairmanship aspirants two weeks ago.
Also, one of the aspirants to the position of the party’s national chairman, Uche Secondus, denied any political truce with Makarfi.
He told journalists yesterday when submitting his nomination form at the PDP national secretariat that there was no truth in the allegation that Makarfi was manipulating the election in his favour in line with an allegedly existing political truce.
However, the party urged stakeholders from the South to harmonise positions on which zone should produce the national chairman, pointing out that failure to do so would mean that only the December 9 convention would solve it.
In another development, a leading contender, Chief Olabode George, has dismissed reports of a crisis in the party.
George, who spoke with reporters in Asaba yesterday shortly after a visit to Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, said that the party is one big family with different people who are bound to differ.
He said he was in the state to solicit support of party delegates for his national chairmanship ambition, stressing that the party needed to ensure a free, fair and transparent electoral process so as not to repeat the mistakes of the past.
Okowa, while speaking during the courtesy visit, said that the party needed to ensure that its national convention was conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner so as to stabilise and move the party forward.
“We are a very organised. We believe that the process of choosing our officers at the national convention will be free, fair and transparent. Everyone has to ensure that it is a fair process to move the party forward,” he said.
Also, another aspirant, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has said that the PDP will bouncing back in a grand style in 2019.
Daniel, who spoke yesterday in Lokoja during his meeting with Kogi PDP’s national delegates for the convention, said the Nigerian masses are ready to “change the change” come 2019.
