Delegates from the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory attended the event.
Gowon, on the occasion, cautioned the founder of the CNNC against fighting the Christian Association of Nigeria in addressing issues that affect Christians in the region.
The former Nigerian leader, who was chairman on the occasion, urged Christians in the North to unite in order to speak with one voice on issues affecting their collective well-being in the country.
“We must work as one, tolerate one another and unite for common interest because without unity among ourselves, we cannot achieve anything and move forward,” Gowon said.
Dogara, in his goodwill message, expressed concern on the lack of unity of purpose among northern Christians and decried the way and manner that emphasis was being laid on denominations.
He said, “The problem among Christians in the North is lack of unity. Where is the love for God and humanity to make others serve God? The greatest enemy of the church and Christian is disobedience.”
Dogara said he would support the new Christian body to achieve its aims and objectives, adding that followers of Christ should learn to forgive one another in order to enjoy God’s blessings.
“To the founders of the CNNC, you should pray for the church, the country and the leadership,” he added.
Earlier in his remarks, the Interim Chairman of the congress, Prof. Adamu Baikie, said the purpose of the congress was not informed by any preconceived notion.
