|Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi,|
In a statement Wednesday evening, signed by his Principal Secretary, Mr. Clement Nweke, Umahi said that Mr. Nwankwoegu was sacked over alleged ‘acts inconsistent with his official duties’.
The statement further directed the former commissioner to hand over government property in his possession to the permanent secretary, Ministry of Justice before the close of work on Thursday, 2 November, 2017.
Meanwhile, Umahi has ordered a full scale investigation over the alleged fraud rocking the payment of pension to retired workers in the state. A press statement signed by his press Secretary Mr Emmanuel Uzor, expressed dismay over reported alleged extortion.
“The issues surrounding the non payment of pension and gratuities in the state had been hinged on criminal padding and inflation of pension and gratuities accruable to some retired civil servants in the state which led to the Committee set up by the State Executive Council to look into the matter and harmonize the payment”, it read.
“It is therefore surprising that some retired civil servants still allege extortion from officials of the audit unit even when the payment of pension entitlements accruable to civil servants are not within the jurisdiction of the Auditor General of Ebonyi State.
“It is also possible that those who allege extortion were part of some bad eggs who look for ways of inflating and doctoring their entitlements in connivance with some officials in the state audit by refusing to appear before the deputy governor led harmonization committee to determine the proper entitlements accruable to each pensioner.
“The governor also reiterates his earlier stance to pay all pensions and gratuities owed retired civil servants since 1999 till date and urges the people involved to present themselves to the office of the deputy Governor saddled with the responsibility of ensuring speedy payments of workers entitlements instead of looking for shortcut to defraud the state government.
“Governor Umahi however expresses shock that despite the widely publicized directive for all retired civil servants to present themselves to the deputy governor’s led committee, some retires still allege extortion even when the office of the auditor General is not the one in charge of harmonizing the proper entitlements of retired civil servants.
“Consequently, the governor directs all retired civil servants who have not completed their physical capturing to do so as those who have completed their physical capturing have been duly paid their retirement entitlements.
“The Governor has also directed the Head of Service, Fiscal Responsibility Commission to wade into the matter and thoroughly investigate the allegation of extortion of the retired civil servants by the officials of the audit unit and assures that anybody found culpable will be made to face severe wrath of the law as his administration will not tolerate such deliberate sabotage of government policies and programmes,” he stressed.
