Scientist Discover super-glue that can glue internal organs together during surgery or injury

Scientists are developing a medical super-glue that they claim can seal wounds in damaged organs and is as strong as natural cartilage.

Bizarrely, the material is based on the properties of a mucus secreted by a species of European slug, the Dusky Arion.
Professor Donald Ingber, founding director of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering in the US, said: ‘Nature has frequently already found elegant solutions to common problems; it’s a matter of knowing where to look and recognising a good idea when you see one.
‘We are excited to see how this technology, inspired by a humble slug, might develop into a new technology for surgical repair and wound healing.’

The Dusky Arion glues itself to surfaces when it feels threatened by a predator.
Tests involving an adhesive that mimics the substance’s molecular structure found that it was able to seal a hole in a pig’s heart and bind wet skin, cartilage and liver tissue.
It could be used similarly to a plaster for mere flesh wounds or as an injection to repair more serious injuries, the researchers said.
