Many trapped as four-storeyed building collapses

Many residents were trapped on Tuesday after a four-storeyed building on Massey Street, Lagos Island, collapsed.

It was said that a telecommunications mast was mounted on the dilapidated building two weeks ago, which allegedly further weakened the structure.

PUNCH Metro gathered that as of 8pm on Tuesday, 16 persons had been rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building and taken to different hospitals for treatment.

 The incident caused traffic in the area as rescue officials, comprising the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the state fire service, the National Emergency Management Agency and the Lagos State Ambulance Service, battled to get other victims out of the wreckage.

The LASEMA General Manager, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, called for calm as rescue operation continued.

He said, “A four-storeyed building totally collapsed at about 2.43pm today,  July 25, 2017, on Massey Street, Lagos Island.

“Fourteen victims were rescued while recovery operation is ongoing by agencies led by LASEMA Response Unit. Other agencies involved in the operation include the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Red Cross and the police. Heavy duty equipment is searching through the rubble.”
