The police and their gang members abducted one Mr. Daniel Umukoro from his country home in Holy Cross Street, Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of the state.
Sources confided that two of the suspects who are serving Mobile Police Officers from Mopol 31 Ogwashi-Uku were already in their custody while detectives from Anti-kidnapping unit had launched a full-scale man-hunt for two others who are now at large.
Umukoro’s kidnappers Corporals Musa Edom and Idide Oreva, were promptly swooped on by a Special Crack Team from the Anti-kidnapping Committee led by Austine Opumbor, Mabiaku Ommassan, Abraham Obarume and Tony Edafiogho at Okpara waterside also in same local government council of the state.
An eyewitness account which aided the arrest of the suspects said he was attracted to the scene by the sporadic gun shots from the kidnappers.
According to the Anti-kidnapping committee set up by the House standing Committee on Peace and Security and headed by Hon. Micheal Diden said the breakthrough of the arrest of the suspects was quite tasking.
One of the Leaders of the Anti-kidnapping committee, Tony Edafiogho who gave details of how the suspects were arrested said immediately they got hint of the kidnap of Umukoro Daniel at Abraka, they mobilized their men for the rescue mission.
Nemesis played a cruel role when unknown to the police kidnappers an Okada operator who witnessed the incident from some meters away, was on their trail, this was what gave them out, the source said.
The two mobile Police officers who were among five others assigned to a nipping point at Abraka are regarded in police cycle as incarnate of Gorge Iyamu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) executed in 1986 along with Lawrence Anini (aka the law) for complicity.
The Delta State Police Ag. Spokesperson, Mr. Andy Aniamaka who confirmed the arrest of the policemen, both corporals, said that they are currently in detention at the state headquarters in Asaba, while the other members of the gang are still at large.
Aniamaka explained that Efe who owed David Edubra to the tune of N50, 000 had contacted Oreva to help apprehend Efe through the Divisional Police Headquarters located in Abraka but the policeman turned down the request on the ground that he is an anti-riot policeman.
According to him, Edom who was on duty at Abraka was contacted to apprehend Efe, insisting that the police would not spare any member of the force who goes against the law.
Aniamaka, a Deputy Superintendent of Police gave the names of the policemen as Ededi Oreva and Musa Edom said that the police were on illegal duty and that their action amounted to misconduct, assuring that they would be dealt with according to the law.
