Youths on rampage over Minister’s sex comments
Singaporeans took to social media on Thursday to vent their anger after a minister urged childless couples to have sex if they wanted to be prioritised for public housing.
“You need very small space to have sex,’’ senior minister of state Josephine Teo told newsmen, in response to comments from young people who said they could not procreate if they did not live together in flats.
Singaporeans mocked Teo’s remarks online, with websites suggesting cheeky spots to have sex, such as stairwells, handicapped toilets and rooms in parents’ houses.
A Straits Times poll showed that 92 per cent of respondents believed a couple should obtain a flat first before having a child instead of the other way around.
“A new generation of pioneers is emerging, specifically, in terms of how they will meet both family and career aspirations in new, imaginative ways,’’ Teo said.
Report says under the government’s housing and Planned Parenthood scheme, couples with children or those expecting babies have higher priority in getting public housing.
The country has introduced various initiatives to get its citizens to procreate, as Singapore’s fertility rate at 1.3 births per woman is the fifth lowest in the world, according to the World Bank.
These efforts include giving cash bonuses of up to 10,000 Singapore dollars (7,220 dollars) to couples who give birth to a third child.
