Thunder kills 21 Cows is not scientifically possible
On Thursday, October 13, 2016, it was widely reported many media outlets that 21 cows had been killed by thunder in Nassarawa state.
The report attributed to Leadership newspaper is not only funny but also impossible.
According to the story the Zonal Secretary, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Nasarawa South, Nasarawa State, Jaafaru Usman said 21 cows died during the downpour in the state on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. Usman attributed the death to thunder.
Nowhere in recorded history has thunder killed cows. It is also scientifically impossible for cows to drop dead because of rumblings in the sky. The only way this could have happened is if the 21 cows had heart attacks when they heard thunder. Have you ever heard of cows having heart attacks before?
The most logical reason for the death of the cows is lightning. It is a known fact that lightning can kill groups of animals. In August 2016, lightning killed 300 reindeer in Norway.
A lot of people think that lightning strikes only one point. This is wrong. Lightning strikes an area causing ground current. When it hits the ground, it spreads. Animals within the path of the current would most likely be electrocuted, with the electricity going up one leg, stop the heart and go out of the other leg.play
In essence, the cows did have heart attacks but not from thunder but most likely from lightning. This is the best explanation for the death of the 21 cows.
It's humourous that a lot of news outlets ran with the story without asking a few basic questions.
