Suspected cocaine intercepted in an unusual form
The Nigeria Customs Service, Tincan Island Port, Lagos State, has intercepted 200 packs of a substance suspected to be cocaine in a 20-foot container belonging to Nigerite Limited.
The substance was in eight bags, each containing 25 packs of the substance.
The packs were carefully concealed in the container, marked CMAU 045195/0, with origin identified as New Zealand.
Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, who received the packs, confirmed them to be cocaine.
In a press conference on Thursday, the Customs Area Controller, Tincan Island Port, Controller Yusuf Bashar, told journalists that the command intercepted the container after it got an intelligence report.
The agent in charge of the container could not talk to the media as he was alleged to have fled the scene, even as the Nigerite Procurement Manager, Amata Jonah, said he did not know how the item was sneaked into the container since the company did not deal in drugs.
However, Jonah, and the clearing agent were later taken in for questioning.
The spokesperson for the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoju, said the company could be shut down if it was implicated.
