NIS warns illegal immigrants

Sesan Olufowobi

The Nigeria Immigration Service, Lagos State Command, has warned 35 illegal immigrants against returning to the state.

The illegal immigrants were arrested following a raid on the Lekki area of the state.

The NIS Comptroller in the state, Mrs. Clara Okojie, said illegal immigrants were security risk, adding that the command would continue to repatriate them to their countries.

She said, “While the ECOWAS protocol allows citizens of member states to move freely in ECOWAS territory, citizens desirous of staying in Nigeria for 90 days as provided by the protocol should register at NIS divisional offices as failure to do so will ultimately lead to arrest and subsequent repatriation to country of origin.”

Okojie appealed to Nigerians to ensure that immigrants they offered  employment had  proper documents permitting them to work.

The command’s spokesperson Mr. Jide Ogungbe, a Deputy Superintendent of Immigration, said the 35 immigrants found to be without any document included nine Beninoise, three Togolese, four Ghanaians and 19 Nigeriens.”
