A chief magistrate court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital has remanded eight persons in prison custody over alleged night burglary and stealing of property worth N300,000.
They are Ezebunwo Amadi (21), Emmanuel Aleruchi (20), Samuel Kingsley(19), Uche Aaron(22), Precious Barinua(20), Junior Oni(21), Franklin Iheadindu (19), and Uchechukwu Vincent (21).
The suspects were also charged with cultism.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Wilson Isaiah told the presiding Magistrate Mr. S. D. Andrew Jaja, that the suspects on July 31, 2016 conspired and broke into the house of Police Sergeant Jonah Etinyene and the shop of one Samuel Ndubueze and carted away property worth N70,000 and N217,000 respectively.
Isaiah said the suspects committed offence contrary to sections 51)(a), 411(2), 413(1) and section 1(1), of the criminal code, Cap 37 volume 11 Laws of the Federal republic of Nigeria, 2004 and secret cult and similar activities prohibition law number 6 of Rivers state 2004.
They pleaded not guilty to the five count charge pressed upon them and were remanded to custody by the magistrate.
In the charge sheet obtained by The Nation, the accused persons committed the offence at the Elimgbu axis of the state.
They were said to have stolen items like generating sets, different brands of flat screen Television sets, gas cooker, DVD player, totaling about N300,000.
Efforts by their legal representations to secure their bail was frustrated. The matter was later adjourned to October 13 for consideration of bail application.
