Shortly after going independent, in 1979 Marshal single-handedly released his first album ‘Abode Mecca’, which was a huge success. Wasiu Ayinde Marshal was now a force to be reckoned with and was picked up and signed to Baba Laje Records. Since then Marshal has continued to consistently wax stronger as he innovatedand recreated the Fuji music genre with the inclusion of the Keyboards, Saxophones and Guitars.Marshal is also accredited for his creative innovation of up-tempo percussive rhythms and complex drum arrangements; a concept unorthodox to the Fuji genre. Fuji Music, originating from the Islamic genre “Were”, initially appealed to Muslims only at its inception, but with Marshal’s musical intelligence, Fuji Music has now been generally accepted, acknowledged and celebrated.
Marshal is directly responsible for the birth of Western Fuji, Modern Fuji, Classical Fuji and Fuji Step-up. Along with each reincarnation of Fuji, he also rebranded his name hence Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde Barrister, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal 1 (Kwam 1) and finally K1 De Ultimate.
In his consistent effort of globalizing the Fuji genre, Marshal remains the only Fuji Artist to Headline at the World of Music Art & Dance (WOMAD) festival in United Kingdom, World Music Exposition (WOMEX) festival in Netherlands, TROXY in London, Sounds of Brazil (SOB’s) in New York City, among touring several other parts of the world.
With a successful career spanning over 40 years in the music industry, Fuji remains incomplete without K1 De Ultimate. His remarkable achievements and contributions as an Indigenous Music Icon is well recognized and archived, never to be forgotten as he cuts across various generations, classes and tribes.
